All You Need to Know About Scandinavian Airlines Personal Item Only
The Nordic countries – Norway, Sweden, Finland, Denmark, and Iceland – offer a wide range of beautiful landscapes as well as modern cities. Whether you are into nature and hiking or big city life, these travel destinations deserve a place on your travel bucket list. If you’re already planning a visit to a Scandinavian or Nordic country, chances are that you might be flying with Scandinavian Airlines (SAS). This article explores everything you need to know about travelling with Scandinavian Airlines personal item only. Read on to find out more.
Minimalist Travel – A Guide to Scandinavian Airlines Personal Item Only
If you are travelling on a budget, then choosing to travel with hand luggage only is a great way to save on your airfare. You can save even more if you travel even lighter with personal items only. It requires a bit of effort to pack lightly but it’s also so refreshing to not have to drag around any suitcases.
What luggage is included in your ticket when flying with SAS depends on your ticket type and where you are travelling to and from. The SAS Go Light ticket option only includes a personal item.
What is an underseat bag SAS?
The personal item is also called underseat bag in some areas of the SAS website. This can be a small handbag, a laptop bag, a backpack or similar – as long as it doesn’t exceed the maximum size of 40 cm x 30 cm x 15 cm (length x width x depth). The Scandinavian airlines personal item backpack size in inches is: 15.7″ x 11.8″ x 5.9″ (length x width x depth).
The personal item needs to fit under the seat in front of you on the flight. There are some restrictions for items that are not allowed as personal items and also some items that are prohibited. Before travelling, always read the most up to date information on the airline’s website.
What size backpack can you take on Scandinavian airlines?
What size backpack can be a personal item? The maximum dimensions of a personal item is the size limit for a personal backpack on Scandinavian airlines so make sure your backpack is not bigger than this when packed.
How strict is SAS with personal items?
What if my personal item is one inch too big? From experience, SAS is not strict with personal items compared to other European airlines. The budget airlines are usually more strict with these things as they make a big chunk of their money by charging people for bags that are too large or too heavy.
SAS does not seem to be running their business in quite the same way. I have never had my hand luggage weighed or measured by SAS no matter what ticket type I have had and I have never seen this happen to anyone else when boarding either. I have been flying regularly with SAS for over 20 years.
SAS Personal Item Backpack Recommendations
The personal item maximum size for SAS is smaller than some airlines so be careful buying a bag that’s “Under-seat Approved” such as the Classic Cabin Backpack from Cabin Zero. This is a great-looking bag but it’s too large for Scandinavian Airlines – the depth is actually 5cm bigger than the allowed measurement for SAS which is quite a bit too much. Always check the measurements before purchasing a bag for air travel.
I have found a few backpack options that adhere to the personal item maximum size for SAS and even use the allowance to the fullest. These two bags are both available to purchase from Amazon.co.uk:
- Aerolite Under Seat Flight Bag (40cm x 30cm x 15cm)
- CabinFly Bellanca Underseat Backpack (40cm x 30cm x 15cm)
I personally use the Grey Compact Backpack from Trendhim (also available in other colours) which you can see in the photos above. It’s official size is 42cm x 30cm x 10cm but because it’s a soft and squishy bag the extra 2cm in height don’t matter unless you stuff it to the brim. This rucksack also has lots of handy pockets and when they are full it’s nice to have a few extra centimetres to play around with for the depth – it’s 5cm smaller than the maximum allowed depth but fuller pockets can naturally affect this.
