Camping is the Perfect Opportunity to Enjoy Screen-Free Family Time

Camping is all about spending time in nature, enjoying the great outdoors. Though modern campsites and campsite set-ups often come with lots of home comforts so it’s rarely as basic as it could be. It’s also not rare to see children (and grown-ups!) still playing on screens at camp even though camping is the perfect opportunity to enjoy screen-free family time. Here’s why.

  • You’re in a new environment.

Being somewhere that’s completely different to where you normally spend your days means there is so much to explore. There will be interesting landmarks to visit nearby, family friendly activities and most likely local nature to discover – walking trails, beaches, woodland, or mountains. There are so many fun and exciting things to do instead of just looking down at a screen.

  • You’re on holiday.

If you are on a camping trip that most likely means that the kids are off school and therefor don’t need to do any schoolwork and that you, the parents, are on holiday from work. This means that you have way more time than usual to actually spend time together, doing fun things. Play cards or travel board games, chat around the campfire, or simply do the camping chores that need to be done together.

  • You’ll be able to use your senses fully.

Without screens interrupting our days when camping, you’ll be able to fully experience it all. Constantly having a phone in your hand or other technological devices is disruptive and makes it hard for you to focus on the real pleasures of life. Without a screen, your ears will be able to hear the sounds of nature – animals and weather, your eyes will be able to see all the beauty around you – day and night, you’ll be able to taste your food properly, smell the grass and the flowers, and feel things with your hands that are not busy tapping away on a screen…

And…

Parents need to set a good example and put their phones away too. Put your phone on silent, turn off notifications, and only get your phone out when you actually need it – for navigation, photography, or to make essential phone calls. Try to do any research that you need to do about activities etc. before you arrive so that you don’t need to use your phone for that whilst camping.

Camping is the perfect opportunity to enjoy screen-free family time. Take this chance to avoid screens as much as possible to connect with nature and each other instead. You will not regret it.
